Fashion & Confidence
Lately I've been going through some major changes - I am graduating in a week, I've restarted my blog from scratch after loosing my old one of 5 years, and, of course all of the inner changes have been reflected in my fashion choices. I will be 27 in a couple months, and for some reason this number has been my personal big date. Not 30 like for most people, but 27. I think it might be because my mom had my sister at 27 and to me that number seemed like a first maturity ribbon that you get when running a marathon of life, you know? If you ran your first 5K that's when you turn 21, now I am at my 10 K and ready to move onto a bigger distance.
When I got my first big job in college I changed my whole wardrobe. When you are 18, you want to look older. You want people to take you more seriously, especially in the business world. So I wore fitted classic black and dark blue dresses, white shirts and pencil skirts. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing anything that showed my belly! First of all, because I was always so self-conscious about my figure (and I was about 20 lbs lighter at the time), and second of all I did not want to look like a teenager. I wanted to be a part of a grown up world!
Now I realize that growing up doesn't mean dressing like an adult. Growing up means wearing whatever you want and being comfortable in your own skin. That's a representation of your freedom and self-acceptance. There were so many taboos that I created for myself when I was a teenager ("you must wear heels always, you are so short!", "no short skirts, your legs are too fat", "cover your shoulders", "don't show too much cleavage" and oh so many more!). Finally just now I am realizing that I can and should dress up for myself, not for everyone around.
The main purpose of fashion is to make you feel good, to give you confidence, and to better your life! If you wear whatever makes you feel amazing, your demeanor and your mood changes! Think of the times when you dressed up for a special occasion and wore something super fancy. How did that make you feel? If you dressed up like that daily do you think you would achieve a lot more?
Thank God I feel like I don't have to justify my fashion choices anymore. Thank God there are so many brands and fashion pieces available to choose from that help me express my individuality. Be confident wearing whatever you want and let whatever you are wearing give you the confidence you need!
